The most difficult part of the zero waste approach is to say “Go, I'll give it a try! Afterwards, you have to take it one step at a time.
You've been home for over a month. You have decluttered your home. Why not eliminate recurring waste? In times of health crisis, bulk hygiene products are less of a concern than food products. So I suggest you start with buying soaps in bulk! In addition, you kill two birds with one stone: hello, spring cleaning!
The 5 R rule
You probably already know the 5 R rule? Béa Johnson, in her book Zero Waste, explains (in English!) the very essence of the zero waste movement. In French, it is rather 4 R and 1 C for:
- Refuse a product we don't need
- Reduce our purchases and goods;
- Reuse and repair the objects we have at home;
- To recycle;
- Compost.
You notice that recycling is the penultimate principle. Basically, it's really about reducing our consumption, by reusing or by refusing. Recycling has a financial and environmental cost for society, this should not be forgotten!
Did you know that only 9% of plastic is recycled, that recycled plastic is less good than new since it loses its properties and that all the plastic that exists will one day become microplastics? And single-use plastic turns into microplastic faster than plastics made to have a certain lifespan.
"Honey, we're going zero waste"
Now that you've made the decision, you need to take action. Where to start? Hygiene products for the kitchen, laundry room or bathroom ?
The first step is to bring bags , reusable containers and packaging. You can put your new products there. Another idea would be to buy the first bottles and refill them at each visit. In both cases, you will be proud to limit your packaging!
